T-Max Drag Strip (Concord, NC)

Sunday morning I accepted an invitation to photograph the day’s event at Concord’s T-Max Drag Strip. Honestly, I’ve only seen drag races in old movies and was completely unaware that to so many people, this is their life. The smoldering sun was relentless and ice cold water was not only refreshing, but necessary. I explored this world for the better part of the day and was happy to watch my new friend, Chris Parisi, become the new champion of the Super Stang class. Go Orange!

Fat Fury @ Iron Thunder (Charlotte, NC)

I come from a music loving family, with many drummers, and as a small child was always fascinated by the mystery of my uncle Scott’s band, Fat Fury. “Nothin’ but a Good Time” was the motto of this grey bearded gentleman in his top hat & blue and purple suit, rich in his cartoon glory. His images seemed to be everywhere and when asking if I could go, I was always told that I was too young. Time passed and the little girl became a woman. Last weekend, I finally met the infamous Fat Fury at Iron Thunder, a biker bar in Charlotte, NC. Though time has slightly changed his outward appearance, his heartbeat remained the same as legend has it.

Albemarle County Fair (North Garden, VA)

Who doesn’t love a county fair? Or Carnival, as my daughter prefers to call it. It’s a Soul Circus of sorts with contests, amusement rides, livestock and equine tents, agricultural education, beauty pageants, bakeoffs, and several varieties of music ranging from local favorites to up and coming national groups - there is certainly something for everyone! The weather held out for the most part, and the short rainfall wasn’t enough to dampen anyone’s spirits. If you missed it this year, mark your calendars now for next year. Just remember, ladies…the fair is no place for your high heels!

James River Batteau Festival (Central Virginia)

Saturday before last, men, women, and children anxiously climbed aboard their boats to embarq on a journey with life on the James River in celebration of the 24th Annual Batteau Festival. The Batteau Festival is an eight-day boating and camping trip from Lynchburg to Richmond, celebrating nature and life on the water during early American history. Through these images you will find that stories were shared, friendships were formed (or strengthened), love was born, a couple honeymooned, but most importantly, people worked together when faced with an obstacle. I am very excited about this series and welcome your feedback. This body of work is still evolving. Please check back often!
